Judith Kay (Vaupel) Flamm
It is with great sadness that we announce that Judith Kay (Vaupel) Flamm of Cobden, Ill., passed away in the early morning of March 14, 2024.
Judy Flamm, originally from Carmi, Ill., was born on December 20, 1940, to George and Jennavee Vaupel.
She married Leonard “Slim” Flamm Jr. of Cobden on October 22, 1960.
Together, they raised four children while owning and operating Flamm Orchards.
Judy raised her family by example, helping in many ways at home and on the farm. She was a skilled seamstress, homemaker and cook her entire life.
For over twenty years, she operated J and J Upholstery, before stepping away to begin her next chapter.
Judy is probably most well-recognized by her baked goods which started the Flamm Orchards fruits and cream stand. Everything served at Flamm Orchards...the strawberry shortcake, peach cobbler, apple pie, apple dumplings, zucchini and apple bread and more are her original recipes. Her legacy will live on through those recipes still used today.
At home, Judy was a proud mother and grandmother. She was notorious for her ability to fill her home with family no matter how many people that may include, and no one ever left hungry or dissatisfied.
Slim and Judy enjoyed time away from the farm at their homes at the Lake of Egypt in the summers and Florida in the winters. But above all, they were most passionate about their family.
Judy is survived by her four children, Jeff (Leigh Anne) Flamm of Cobden, Donna McClane of Antioch, Calif., Barbara (Allen) James of Cobden and Mike (Lynn) Flamm of Cobden; along with nine grandchildren, Nick (Kara) James of Harrisburg, Carly (Travis) Holtkamp of Anna, Kaylin (Dakota) Lawrence of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Tristan James (Brandon Azoulai) of New York City, N.Y., Austin (Jessica) Flamm of Cobden, Matt (Gabby) McClane of St. Charles, Mo., Parker (Morgan) Flamm of Cobden, Abby McClane of Antioch, Calif., and Meredith Flamm (Zach James) of Cobden; five great-grandchildren, Leonard Holtkamp, Tenley James, Henry Flamm, Eleanor Lawrence and Hudson McClane; one sister, Beth (Tom) Cook of Carmi, Ill.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard; her son-in-law Dana McClane; and her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Fred Wolford. Judy was 83 years old.
Funeral Mass for Judith Kay Flamm was held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cobden, with Father Uriel Salamanca officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cobden. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
