Roy Edward Dakin

Roy Edward Dakin, 79, of Mounds, died at 4:58 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Dakin was born on May 27, 1942, in Ullin, the son of William and Lilly Edith Berry Dakin.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a tech sergeant from 1963 to 1971 as a weather equipment technician. He was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, McClellan AFB in California and Than San Nhut AFB Vietnam. He was stationed in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive.

He was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, the Republic of Vietnam Combat Medal and the AFLSA with a bronze oak leaf cluster.

He was a railroad engineer and retired as a maintenance supervisor from the City of Killeen, Texas.

On April 8, 1982, in Mounds, he married Caroline S. Stout. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife; by five sisters, Edith Guild, Margaret Godar, Dorothy Bernier, Josephine Poole and Virginia Holshouser; and three brothers, William Dakin, Russell “Rusty” Dakin and Joseph Dakin.

He is survived by his sons, Tim (Phyllis) Dakin and Shawn (Shannon) Dakin, both of Tamms; a daughter, Michelle Goode of Orient; a sister, Vivan Shieble of Mounds; grandchildren Christopher Goode, Logan McLaskey, Nicklos Dakin, Lance Dakin and Brittany Dakin; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge. The Rev. Buddy Walls officiated. 

Interment followed in the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City. Full military honors were accorded by the U.S. Air Force burial team and area veterans.
