Ruth Hankla

Ruth Hankla, 93, of Anna, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2016, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born in Jonesboro on Dec. 15, 1922, the daughter of Frederick E. and Nora Shy Meyer.

She married Ray Hankla on Sept. 19, 1942, in Cape Girardeau.

She was an active member of the Jonesboro Methodist Church, where she played the piano and was treasurer for many years. Later, she joined the Anna First Baptist Church.

During World War II, she worked at the Cadillac Motor Company in Detroit, Mich. Along with being a member of the VFW Auxiliary, she also worked as a secretary for Landreth Insurance. She also enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Dexter) Rhodes of Afton, Wyo., and Loretta (Dennis) Sitter of Jonesboro; one stepson, Kenneth (Dorothy) Hankla of Pinckneyville; grandsons Matt Rhodes and Tyler Sitter; two step-granddaughters, Crystal Hankla and Betsy Rushing; two step-great-grandsons, Allen Rushing and Aaron Rushing; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Hankla; an infant son, Freddie Joe; a sister, Hazel Basse; a brother, Ted Meyer; a foster sister, Helen Rowland; and nephews, Jim Basse and Edward Meyer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hankla will be at 1 p.m. at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro on Friday, July 15, with the Rev. Terry Mejean officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Friends can call after noon and until the service hour at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Memorials can be made to the Jonesboro Public Library.
