Sheila P. Lopez Thornton

Sheila P. Lopez Thornton, 72, of Buncombe, died Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Jackson Manor in Jackson, Mo. 

She was born on May 6, 1950, the daughter of Silver Star recipient Edward Sr. and Ermadene York Hosick. 

She married James Thornton on Oct. 9, 2004, at New Hope Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, James Thornton of Buncombe; five daughters, Dawn (Joseph) Mitchell of Dowell, Graciela Lopez (Wesley Garner) of Marble Hill, Mo., Susana Lopez of Cape Girardeau, Veronica Lopez (Jon Walter) of Cape Girardeau and Jessica Lopez of Jackson, Mo.; stepson Eric Thornton of Anna; seven grandchildren, Aleah (Tyler) Walker, Joshua and Lilyana Mitchell, Jaquelyn Walter, Benjamin and Samuel Garner, and Vivienne Walter; three great-grandchildren, Hudson, Westin and Gannon Walker; two sisters, Carolyn (Fidel) Mata of Ohio and Christine (Wilgus) Turner of Austin, Ind.; an aunt, Carolyn York of Carmi; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward “Pete” Jr. (Cathy) Hosick; a great-grandson, Mackson Walker; and a nephew, Francisco Mata.

She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church for many years. She was a social butterfly and had a passion for life. She always wanted to learn new things, was adventurous and loved to travel, especially to Florida with her daughters. She enjoyed fishing with her husband James, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren. 

Mrs. Thornton worked as a medical transcriptionist for several hospitals, including Union County Hospital, Southeast Hospital and Rural Health. 

The family thanked Jackson Manor Staff for their care and love and to all the residents for being her friend and everyone at Crown Hospice for their compassion, care and comfort.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at New Hope Baptist Church, 2050 New Hope Rd., Buncombe, with Pastor Mike Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. 

Friends may visit after 11 a.m. and until the service at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at New Hope Baptist. 

Memorials can be made to Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services in Carmi. Envelopes will be available at the church and at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home.
