Steven V. Mainer

Steven V. Mainer, 56, died at 9:22 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville.

Born on Oct. 22, 1959, in St. Louis, he was the son of Lowell V. and Dorothy Lence Mainer of Godfrey.

He graduated from Alton Senior High School and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, with a degree in mass communication.

He started his newspaper career early as a paper boy for the Alton Telegraph, where he also did his internship. After college, he worked as a reporter and copy editor for papers in Corpus Christi, Orange and Beaumont, Texas. He later moved to Belleville to work for the Belleville News Democrat as an editor.

He was an avid runner and swimmer. He loved to travel in his younger years, especially to Maine and Florida. He was baptized at the Godfrey Church of Christ at an early age.

Along with his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Mark Mainer of Alton and Michael Mainer (Caron) of St. Peters, Mo.; four nephews and two nieces; and a dear friend Donna Weeks.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernest and Gladys Lence of Cobden and Rosetta and Ralph Brown of Jonesboro; and a niece, Kristen Mainer.

Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton. The Reverend James Lampley officiated.

Memorials can be made to the Godfrey Church of Christ, the American Heart Association, the 5A's Animal Shelter in Alton or a memorial of one's choice.
