William J. Halter Sr.

William J. Halter Sr., 89, of Anna, died at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1928, the son of John and Lillie Andres Halter.

He married Kathryn Haney on June 24, 1954.

He served in the Illinois Army Reserves as a first lieutenant and in the Missouri National Guard as second lieutenant. He attended Southeast Missouri State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in education. He then went on the receive his master’s degree from Southern Illinois University.

He taught industrial engineering for many years at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. He coached football and golf and was accredited for starting the A-J golf team. When he retired from teaching, he became a broker for Classic Properties and sold real estate. He was president of Union County Country Club and a PGA member. He was on the FLW fishing circuit for many years. He was a past exalted ruler at Anna Elks Lodge No 1641. He was also a founding member and treasurer of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Anna; sons William J. (Judy) Halter Jr. of Anna and Thom Halter of Anna; two grandchildren, Amanda and Will; one great-grandchild, Aubrey; nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by two sisters, Josephine Cowell and Dorothy Bloomfield.

Funeral Mass was at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna, with Father Federico Higuera officiating. Inurnment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Memorials can be made to the A-JCHS golf team or to St. Mary’s Church and will be accepted at the funeral home and church.
