Only one starter returns for Cobden

The Cobden High  School girls’ basketball team advanced to the super-sectional last year before ending its season.

Only one starter is returning from last season’s 26-6 squad as Cobden prepares for the 2010-2011 campaign.

“You’ve got to adjust to what you have,” Cobden head coach Travis Foster said. “It’s going to be a lot different this year.”

The lone returner is 5-9 senior foward Kayla Quertermous.

Players who saw plenty of action last season and should contribute are seniors: 5-10 center Maria Piper; 5-6 guard Alysha Bottje; 5-7 guard/forward Jordyn Grey; and 5-5 junior point guard Bekah Russell.

“Our strengh last season was get out and go,” Foster said. “We’ll be more of a half court team. I’d like for us to get up and down the floor. We’re still going to push (it up the floor) just not as much as last season.”

Strength off the bench should come from 5-6 junior guard Krysti Davis and 5-10 sophomore forward Devyn Inman.

Foster said the program is low in numbers this season. The squad has 14 players from freshmen through seniors.

“We just don’t have the numbers,” he said.

Still, Foster believes the potental to continue winning remains.

“Our strength will be in playing smart and making the right plays when we have it,” he said. “We’ll just have to be more patient.”

The Appleknockers open their season at Pope County Tuesday, Nov. 23.
