Resolution addresses six county commissioners

A step was taken last week in connection with expansion of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

Union County voters have approved expanding the number of commissioners from the current three to five.

Two more commissioners will be added to the board in the 2012 election.

Last week, a resolution was approved "regarding the transition of terms for the current three member board of county commissioners and the addition of two county commissioners for six year terms."

The resolution was approved at a regular meeting of the county board held last week. The meeting was Monday afternoon, Dec. 20, at the Union County Board of Commissioners in Jonesboro.

The resolution approved by the commissioners was drafted by Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds. The state's attorney worked with Union County Clerk Bobby Toler Jr. in drafting the document.

The resolution addressed the transition of terms for the current three commissioners and the addition of two more members.

In the 2012 general election, Union County voters will elect one commissioner who will serve a six-year term. This post on the board currently is held by Randy Lambdin.

Voters also will elect one other commissioner who also will serve a six-year term and one  commissioner who will serve a four-year term.

After the 2012 general election, each county commissioner will be elected to six-year terms.

The resolution also establishes that candidates will "file nomination papers for and be nominated for and elected to a specific office."
