Roy R. Long Sr.
Roy R. Long Sr., 83, of Perks, died at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at his home.
He was born on March 18, 1926, in Salem, Ky., the son of Duke and Leona Loyd Long.
He married Elsie Viola Johnson on July 27, 1945. She preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2003.
He was of the Pentecostal faith. He and his grandson, Gerald, performed gospel music in churches throughout the area. He worked for the chipwood plant in Tamms for three years. He was a farmer most of his life. He also worked for three years for the C&I Railroad, laying rail from Chicago to Thebes.
He is survived by two sons, Roy Ray (Tressie) Long Jr. and Lewgene (Dolores) Long, both of Perks; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepbrothers, L.T. Long and Freddie Long, both of Kentucky; one stepsister, Louise Long of Kentucky; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one daughter, Bonnie Sue Long; one grandson; one sister, Luvene Duckworth; and two brothers, Doug and Bill Long.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin with the Rev. Bill Schierbaum officiating. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery in Grand Chain.
Crain Funeral Home in Ullin was in charge of arrangements.
