Cobden baseball team wins Century regional
The Cobden High School baseball team scored wins over Egyptian and host Century on its way to a Class 1A regional championship.
With the regional title in hand, Cobden advanced to sectional play. The Appleknockers are the defending state Class 1A champions.
In first-round action, Cobden had no trouble with Egyptian on its way to a 32-0 victory last Thursday.
J.T. Moore was the winning pitcher for the Appleknockers.
Cobden's Trevor Middleton went 4-for-6 with 5 RBIs. Austin Lewey was 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs. Zane Nance was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Dylan Duty went 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs. Logan Spalt was 2-for-3. Brayden Clark was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
In the regional championship game on Saturday, Cobden scored a 3-2 win over Century in 8 innings.
The Appleknockers scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning.
J.T. Moore doubled, stole 3rd base and scored the winning run on a passed ball.
Moore went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored all 3 of Cobden's runs. Jacob Furlow was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dylan Duty was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Moore also was the winning pitcher. He worked 6 innings, struck out 11, allowed 4 hits and walked 7.
Theron Sweitzer pitched the final inning for Cobden and earned a save. He allowed a hit.
Cobden, 21-9, was scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, today, against Woodlawn in the Goreville Class 1A sectional.
The winner of the game plays host Goreville at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28.
