A-J at Sparta for final road game of season
The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team travels to Sparta for its final road game of the season on Senior Night this Friday.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna.
The Bulldogs enter the game at 1-6 after a 34-16 loss to Carterville last Friday.
“It’s been a very different year,” Sparta coach Ron Dupress said. “We lost our top running back in the first game and we have six starters injured and not playing.”
Sparta is led at quarterback by senior Carlos Keen.
His main target downfield is senior Bradyne Cometto.
The backfield is led by senior Kerry Harris. Others in the backfield are seniors Tony Williams and Isaac Evans and junior Vic Laws.
The offensive line is anchored around seniors Dayton Baue and Bryan Wiliams, Trevon Merideth and junior Luke Sroka.
Defensive stalwarts are Bryan Williams and senior Tony Williams.
“On paper, it looks like a match up that is very similar,” A-J coach Brett Detering said. “It’s Senior Night and they’ve got quite a few seniors. We’ll have to match up to them.”
The Bulldogs have 17 seniors on their roster.
“We've got a bunch of seniors,” Dupree said. “
Detering knows what it will take to get the Wildcats’ third win of the season.
“They've got some kids with speed,” Detering said. “We’ve got to be able to take care of the ball.”
