A-J/Cobden advances to title game

Boys’ high school soccer regional

The Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden co-op boys’ soccer team lost 2-1 to host Carbondale in a Class 2A regional championship Friday, Oct. 19.

Nicholas Bussey scored the lone goal for A-J/Cobden. Blake Pena had an assist.

Goal keeper Jacob Schaefer played 80 minutes in goal and had 22 saves and stopped 2 penalty kicks.

“It was a good  game,” A-J/Cobden boys’ soccer coach Mark Boomer said. 

A-J/Cobden finished the season 10-9-1 overall and graduates only three seniors in Avery Webb, Jackson Lasiter and Noah Godinez. 

“We’re a young team and we’re making steps in the right direction,” Boomer said.

A-J/Cobden 5, Centralia 1: Pena scored three goals to lead A-J/Cobden to the first-round win in the regional at Carbondale Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Romeo Godinez scored twice on penalty kicks.

Goal keeper Schaefer played 80 minutes in goal and had 12 saves.
