'Tis the season

Several recent special events in Union County have helped to brighten the holiday season – and more are coming.

The first Christmas in Downtown Anna celebration was held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. While the weather was a bit on the wet side, it did not dampen the spirits of those who participated.

The weather was nicer last Saturday for Cobden's annual Christmas in the Village celebration. People enjoyed a wide range of activities which took place during the day.

Sunday afternoon, the PAST organization of Union County welcomed community members to the landmark St. Anne's Church in Anna for a holiday season Carols at Candlelight event. The accompanying picture was taken at St. Anne's Church Sunday.

Still to come during the Christmas season: Union County schools have scheduled holiday programs. And churches throughout Union County will be having special events and services to celebrate Christmas.

We thank all of those who are working to help make the Christmas season a joyous time of year in Union County.

<strong>Veterans' home fees</strong>

A large audience came out on a cold and wet December afternoon to attend a public forum at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

The focus of the forum was on a possible increase in maintenance fees which would affect the veterans who live at the home, as well as their families.

We understand that the State of Illinois is facing an ongoing fiscal crisis. We hope that veterans, and their families, will not be asked to bear financial burdens which could cause them hardship.
