Tom Sherrill Memorial Golf Scramble planned

The sixth annual Tom Sherrill Memorial Golf Scramble is set for Sept. 17 at the Union County Country Club course in Anna.

The event is in honor of Tom Sherrill, who served as a school board member for 24 years at the Jonesboro Grade School. Tom passed away on July 27, 2011.

The scramble aims to raise $17,250, which would make a total of $100,000 raised during the existence of the foundation.

The Lick Creek Educational Foundation is grateful for the support given from the community. “It reinforces what can be done through a cooperative effort when communities in the Union County area work together,” Coach Ron Fulenwider said in announcing the event.

As state funds are in decline, the money generated over the past six years have helped maintain or improve area educational efforts.

The proceeds from the golf scramble have been used for educational improvements, including teacher workshops and training, classroom grants, technology, academic enrichment, capital assets and equipment, library books, teaching aids, special materials and educational field trips.

The scramble will include a live auction by Alex Belcher, a silent auction and dozens of items for the raffle.

Two Olympic athletes are scheduled to be in attendance.

Willie Smith, former All-American track star from Auburn University and three-time Olympian and 1984 gold medalist, and Cameron Wright, former all-American high jumper from Southern Illinois University and 1996 Olympic high jumper.
