Wildcats score win over Appleknockers

Brady Wright tossed in 16 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to power Anna-Jonesboro to a 62-32 win over host Cobden in non-conference high school boys’ basketball action Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Travis Smith scored 15 points for the Wildcats. Wright and Smith each had a pair of 3-pointers. Smith also added 5 rebounds.

Tyler Vaughn, who also made a pair of 3-pointers, added 7 points and 2 rebounds for A-J. Jarid Veronesi chipped in 7 points, Jay Kemp 5, Caleb Mixen and Ben McFarland 4 each, Cody Garver 3, Evan Hughey 2 and Colton James 1.

J.C. Chapman scored 14 points to lead the Appleknockers. Tyler Lewey added 8 points, Josh Aspen 4 and Zach Moore and Austin Flamm 3 each.

A-J led 11-9 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime. The Wildcats were ahead 40-19 heading into the final period.

A-J was 15 of 29 from 2-point range, 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 14 of 21 from the free throw line.

Cobden was 10 of 27 from 2-point range, 2 of 8 from 3-point range and 6 of 15 from the charity stripe.

Du Quoin 48, A-J 42: The Wildcats let a first half lead slip away in the loss to visiting Du Quoin in a Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division game Friday, Dec. 9.

The game was tied 8-8 after one quarter. The Wildcats made a 17-9 run in the second quarter to build a 25-17 halftime advantage. The Indians fought back though and outscored the Wildcats 14-5 in the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead heading into the final stanza.

Wright scored 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and pulled down 6 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Smith had 11 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers, and 2 rebounds. Mixen had 7 points and 3 rebounds, Veronesi had 6 points and 4 rebounds and Kemp had 2 points and a rebound. Garver added 2 points.

  The Wildcats were 12 of 23 from 2-point range, 4 of 15 from 3-point range and 6 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Indians were 18 of 38 from 2-point range, 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 6 of 12 from the charity stripe.

A-J, 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference, plays Friday at home against Pinckneyville and Saturday at home against Massac County.
