Wildcats win two games in overtime

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team finished 2-1 in recent  action, both wins coming in overtime.

A-J 41, West Frankfort 38: A-J’s Brady Wright pulled down a rebound after the visiting Redbirds missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer in overtime to seal the win Saturday, Jan. 28. 

Wright led the Wildcats with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Jay Kemp added 10 points and 5 rebounds, Travis Smith had 7 points and 2 rebounds, Tyler Vaughn added 3 points and 3 rebounds and Caleb Mixen and Cody Garver each scored 2.

The Wildcats led 11-7 after one quarter and 19-10 at  halftime. A-J led 28-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats shot 33 percent (11-33) from the field. They shot 2 of 12 from 3-point range, 9 of 21 from 2-point range and 17 of 19 from the free throw line.

The Redbirds shot 38 percent (13-34) from the field. They shot 2 of 8 from 3-point range, 11 of 26 from 2-point range and 10 of 16 from the free throw line.

A-J 50, Du Quoin 47: The visiting Wildcats outscored the Indians 7-4 in overtime for the win Friday, Jan. 27.

The game was tied 9-9 after one quarter. A-J pulled ahead 27-21 at halftime. The Wildcats led 34-30 heading into the fourth quarter. The Indians outscored A-J 13-9 in the fourth quarter to tie the game 43-43 at the end of regulation.

Wright had 16 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Smith added 14 points and 3 rebounds, Garver  9 points and 2 rebounds, Kemp 6 points and 4 rebounds, Vaughn 4 points and Colton James scored 1.

The Wildcats shot 47 percent (14-30) from the field. They shot 3 of 8 from 3-point range, 11 of 22 from 2-point range and 19-26 from the free throw line.

The Indians shot 41 percent (19-46) from the field. They shot 5 of 18 from 3-point range, 14 of 28 from 2-point range and 4 of 7 from the free throw line.

Murphysboro 59, A-J 46: The visiting Red Devils pulled ahead in the third quarter on their way to the win Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Murphysboro led 17-14 after one quarter and 27-25 at halftime. The Red Devils went on a 15-6 scoring run in the third quarter to build a 42-31 lead heading into the final period.

Wright had 20 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Smith added 12 points, Kemp 5, Vaughn 3 and Garver, Mixen and Jarid Veronesi scored 2 each.

The Wildcats shot 48 percent (12-25) from the field. They shot 5 of 10 from 3-point range, 7 of 15 from 2-point range and 17 of 21 from the free throw line.

The Red Devils shot 62 percent (24 of 39) from the field. They shot 5 of 11 from 3-point range, 19 of 28 from 2-point range and 6 of 9 from the free throw line.

A-J, 13-11, is scheduled to play Friday at Pinckneyville.
