Dedication ceremonies for the Cobden Medical Clinic will
be held Sunday afternoon, March 1, in the gymnasium of the
Cobden High School and Open House will be held immediately
following the ceremonies when residents of Cobden and
surrounding areas will have an opportunity to inspect the new
clinic.
Governor William G. Stratton voiced approval of the state
accepting Kornthal Church near Jonesboro as a state historical
shrine at a conference Tuesday in Springfield with six
representatives of the Kornthal Congregation and Historical
Society and four area legislators.
An estimated half thousand guests were present during
Open House at The First National Bank of Jonesboro, held
Sunday afternoon, February 15.
The Inter-Faith Chapel Foundation, Inc., composed of
officers and members of the Union County Ministerial Alliance,
is laying final plans for a drive to raise $3,000 for the
proposed chapel at Anna State Hospital.
Local agricultural and home economics 4-H Club leaders
are invited to attend the District 4-H Leaders’ Conference to
be held on Wednesday, February 25 at the Community Center
in Anna.
The annual meeting of stockholders of the Union County
Locker Service will be held Friday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m.
in the basement area of the Farm Bureau building in Jonesboro.
“Operation Polio Blockade” is scheduled throughout Union
County, Saturday of this week (February 21) from 8 a.m. until
4 p.m., according to Cletus Smith of Jonesboro, chairman
for the March of Dimes campaign in Union County.
The Union County Tourist and Recreation Association
elected the 1959 board members Monday evening at the
regular monthly meeting in the Union County Courthouse,
Jonesboro.
Dr. William Whiting of Dongola plans to purchase the Dr.
John R. Boswell office building in Anna and, after additions
are completed on the building, will move his medical clinic
from Dongola to Anna.
The third in a series of spelling matches was held at the
Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, Friday morning,
February 13, before an all school assembly.
Residents have experienced weather conditions of varying
temperatures from a low of 20 degrees to a high of 61
degrees during the past week, according to J. Bon Hartline,
official weather observer in the Anna area.
Tony Ferrell, Anna-Jonesboro Community High School
Basketball scoring star, has broken the Southwest Egyptian
Conference scoring record. A record of 261 was held by Dick
Howe of Carbondale. Ferrell pushed over this mark Saturday
night with his 31 points at Pinckneyville. Ferrell now has a
total of 281 points and has one more conference game, Murphysboro, left to play.
