Vera Naomi Hickam Grisham

       Mrs. Vera Naomi Hickam Grisham, 88, of Anna passed away at 12:53 a.m., Sunday, July 12, 2009, at her daughter’s home, Barbara Gearhart, in Carbondale. She was born November 16, 1920, in Pomona, the daughter of Homer and Verna (Stone) Noble.  She married Bryan Hickam on September 9, 1939, in Jackson, MO.  He preceded her in death on April 26, 1981.  Vera then married Wilbur “Ubie” Grisham on February 22, 1992, in Anna and he preceded her in death on October 11, 1993.  

Lick Creek registration scheduled

Lick Creek School has scheduled registration for Monday and Tuesday, July 20-21.

Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Parents or guardians are asked to bring the following items with them to registration:

Proof of residency, physical forms (for kindergarten, 6th grade and sports participants), dental forms (for kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grades), and vision exams (for kindergarten).

Union County Hospital welcomes community volunteers

It’s refreshing to see that the spirit of volunteerism is still alive in many communities.

Yet when it comes to "me" actually getting out there, a multitude of excuses arise: the commitment and time factor, age, and fear of not being able to make certain days.

It’s easy to find excuses for just about anything. But why should volunteering be a significant aspect of one’s life?

“Volunteering is about taking part in the world, no matter what the age, and giving back to the community that is there for us each day,” said Mary Nash-Swink.

Mary Faith Treece

Mary Faith Treece, 77, of Jonesboro, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Jonesboro Rehab & Healthcare Center.

She was born on June 26, 1931, in Anna, the daughter of Ralph and Sula Sinks Treece.

She retired from Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna after many years as the timekeeper supervisor.

She is survived by one brother, Doyle Treece of Belleville; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and Earnest Treece; and two sisters, Norma Livesay and Joyce Kee.

2009 Cross-Walk planned Saturday

The Friends of the Cross organization is hoping for a big turnout at this weekend's second annual Restoration Cross-Walk.

The Cross-Walk is planned Saturday, June 13, in the Alto Pass area.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and is a benefit fundraiser for the landmark Cross of Peace, located atop Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass.

Friends of the Cross was organized in 2007 for the sole purpose of raising funds for the restoration of the Cross of Peace.

The organization set a goal of raising $300,000 by June 30, 2010.

Six-word memoirs and accolades seem to be the “in” thing these days. The idea is to try to sum up an entire lifetime, or, perhaps, some other momentous occasion in just six words.

So, we’ll try one: Cobden High School softball. Repeat champions.

With a magnificent, 19-inning victory over Alexis United last Saturday afternoon, the Cobden High School softball team won its second consecutive Illinois High School Association Class 1A state championship.

        Cheryl Jeremiah

        Cheryl L. Jeremiah, 66, of Alto Pass, died at 12:30 p.m. on May 30, 2009, in St. Louis.

        She was born on May 17, 1943, in Spring Valley, the daughter of Ariel and Pearl Vrba Mattioda.

        She married Michael Jeremiah on Sept. 5, 1964, in Spring Valley.

        She was a teacher and protective custodial worker for 10 years. She owned a business, Jeremiah's, for 35 years.

        Survivors include her husband, Michael, of Alto Pass; a daughter, Rachelle Jeremiah of Alto Pass; and a grandson, Gavin.
