Cobden baseball posts two wins in recent action

The Cobden High School baseball team won a pair of games in recent action.

Following are game summaries:

Cobden 6, Meridian 2: Robby Lehr was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the visiting Appleknockers Friday, April 9.

Steve Draper was 1-for-2. Alex Sweitzer was 1-for-3. Aaron Cerny was 1-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

Draper was the winning pitcher, scattering 5 hits to go with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

County officials visiting courthouses in area

The process leading to construction of a new Union County Courthouse continues to move forward.

An update on the work was shared at this week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Monday afternoon at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

In February, Union County voters approved a local sales tax increase which will help to fund the construction of a new courthouse.

Members of a local courthouse committee and other county officials had visited courthouses in Chester and Waterloo.

PAST hosts quilt, table show Saturday in Cobden

“Table Fables and Quilt Tales” was the theme for a 2010 Quilts and Tables Exhibition hosted by the PAST organization of Union County.

The event was Saturday, April 17, at C-Infinity Event Center in Cobden.

PAST members and event cochairpersons Barbara Bauer and Andi Laster welcomed guests to the exhibition and luncheon. 

Andi Laster invited the audience to honor service men and women everywhere. She led the Pledge of Allegiance before a flag quilt made by Candice Hill of Carbondale, when she was 10 years old.

A-J girl’s, boy’s track team compete at Benton Spring Fling

The Anna-Jonesboro High School boy’s and girl’s track teams competed in the Benton Spring Fling to open their spring season Saturday, April 3.

The Wildcat boys recorded two second place finishes.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Caleb Mixen, Jordan Adams, J.R. Woodward and Jesse Webb finished in 8:54.

Webb earned a first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.

A fifth place effort was recorded by Louis Denny in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.8.

Shawnee Hills wines focus of workshop set April 26

A workshop focusing on promoting wines from the Shawnee Hills American Viticultural Area, AVA, in Southern Illinois is planned Monday, April 26, in Union County.

StarView Vineyard near Cobden plans to host the workshop, which is being sponsored by the Shawnee  Hills Wine-Grape Association.

Hours for the workshop are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The workshop is designed for anyone involved in the selling, serving and promoting of Shawnee Hills AVA wines.

Sikeston 5, A-J 0

The Anna-Jonesboro High School girls’ soccer team lost its first home game of the season 5-0 to visiting Sikeston, Mo., Thursday, April 1.

A-J goalkeeper Danyell Hale played 30 minutes in goal and allowed two goals.

Lady Wildcat goalkeeper Kat Gerharz played 50 minutes in goal. She allowed three goals and recorded two saves.

A-J, 2-4, is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at home against Kennett, Mo., and Saturday at Marion.

Disagreement over pitches leads to ejection of A-J softball coaches

A disagreement over illegal pitches led to the ejection of Anna-Jonesboro High School softball coaches in a game at Murphysboro between the Lady Red Devils and the Lady Wildcats Tuesday, March 30.

“Do I wish I should have kept my mouth shut? Yes, maybe we should have kept our composure,” A-J headcoach Kevin Stephens said. “But it was about an official trying to make his point to the adults that he was in charge,” he said.

A-J class of 1965 reunion planned

Members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School class of 1965 are planning to have a reunion this summer.

Reunion organizers are trying to locate the following classmates:

Michael Lott, Dean Smoot, Jo Anna Ladenheim Wallis, Mary Eva Hart Mumper, Barbara Bilderbeck Pryer and Mildred Harris Smith.
