A-JCHS students receive honors at business skills competition

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School students participated in an annual business skills competition hosted Feb. 25 by Shawnee Community College near Ullin.

Students from several area schools competed in various written and production events.

Trophies were awarded for first, second and third place in each event.

A-JCHS students brought home 15 individual trophies:

Nika Vukelic, first in Word Processing I and third in Word Processing II.

Elizabeth Bell, second in Word Processing I.

Frank Maynard Gearhart

Frank Maynard Gearhart, 88, of Manteno, and formerly of Peotone, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at home.

Mr. Gearhart was born on Nov. 13, 1921, in Pomona, the son of Frank and Sara Guinn Gearhart.

Mr. Gearhart served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Augusta during World War II. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.

Mr. Gearhart was a corrections officer who retired with the rank of lieutenant from Statesville Prison in Joliet.

He liked gardening, woodcarving and playing on the computer.

Juanita Walden Warren

Juanita Walden Warren, 97, of Olive Branch, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Warren was born on Oct. 22, 1912, in Alexander County, the daughter of Tony and Ellen Walden.

She was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Ray Warren, on May 15, 1993, and by a son, James H. Warren, on Dec. 18, 2003.

Flood warning continues for rivers More than 2 inches of rain falls during past week

Rain and cool temperatures highlighted Union County's weather during the past week.

Rainfall for the week totalled more than 2 inches in Anna.

The rain came as a flood warning continued along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers in Southern Illinois.

The National Weather Service, NWS, forecast office in Paducah reported Tuesday that river levels in the area were continuing to rise. Crests are expected by Saturday morning.

The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau was at 36.0 feet at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Flood stage is 32.0 feet.

Mildred Irene Menees

Mildred Irene Menees, 91, of Anna, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

She was born on April 11, 1918, in Union County, the daughter of Everett and Grace Bean Menees.

Young pitching staff key for A-J baseball

Several players return this spring from Anna-Jonesboro High School’s 2009 regional championship baseball squad.

“I’m optimistic and excited about the season,” A-J baseball head coach Jake Alley said. “We’ve got a good group of upper classmen. But it’s going to depend on our younger classmates on how well we do.”

The top returner from last season’s 14-16 squad is senior infielder Jordan Chamness, who was an all-conference and All-South selection last season.

County finances continuing concern Commissioner to discuss issue at meeting Monday, March 22

Budget concerns again highlighted discussion at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The bleak status of county finances was on the agenda at a county board meeting held Monday afternoon. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The impact of the State of Illinois' budget crisis on the county has been a matter of ongoing discussion at recent county board meetings.

This week, it was reported that the county had $12,460 in bills and only $10,000 in the general fund account.

Goreville defeats Cobden

Goreville built an early lead on its way to an 84-55 win over Cobden in the Class 1A high school boys’ regional basketball tournament at Meridian Thursday, Feb. 25.

The Blackcats were ahead 17-12 after one quarter and 34-22 at the half. Goreville led 58-40 after three periods.

Robby Lehr scored 32 points to lead the Appleknockers. Alex Sweitzer added 9 points, Bo Gearhart 8, Steve Draper 4 and R.J. Bridges 2.

Cobden closed its season with a 15-11 record.
