Shawnee over Egyptian

Gage Shelton was  3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead host Shawnee to a 12-1 win over Egyptian in high school baseball action Friday, Oct. 1.

Nolen Baltzell was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Redskins. Aiden McMahan was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Dylan Smith, Gavyn Ellet and Adam Pennington combined to pitch a three-hitter.


        A-J varsity volleyball squad falls to 12-10

        The Anna-Jonesboro High School volleyball team lost twice in action last week.

        Sparta 25-25, A-J 15-19: Jordan Edwards had 13 digs and 9 serve receives in leading visiting A-J in the loss Tuesday, Oct. 5.

        Chandra Parr had 10 digs and 5 kills. Emma Basler had 8 serve receives and 4 kills.

        Mackenzie Houseman had 10 assists and Amanda Conaway had 4 blocks and Katie Edwards 1.

        Cheyenne Lingle had 19 good serves, an ace, 5 serve receives and 4 kills to lead the A-J junior varsity to 27-25 and 25-13 wins.

        Five commissioners on Union County ballot

        Voters will decide next week, once again, whether or not to expand the Union County Board of Commissioners.

        A referendum which appears on the Union County ballot next Tuesday asks voters to decide on expanding the number of commissioners from the current three to five. The commissioners would be elected on an at-large basis.

        The issue appeared on the ballot in 2006 in Union County and was approved by voters.

        However, Illinois statutes which were in place at the time would not allow the county to expand the number of commissioners.

        Anna woman faces drug-related charges

        A Union County woman has been charged with two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

        Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds said the charges, both Class 1 felonies, were filed against Timara Sue Kessler of 103 McKinley St. in Anna.

        Kessler allegedly sold prescription drugs from her residence and business located at the McKinley Street address in June of this year.

        The state’s attorney announced the arrest on Sept. 30.

        Kessler was being held at the Tri-County Detention Center at Ullin on $350,000 bond.

        William R. Sheeley

        William Reed Sheeley, 68, of Camdenton, Mo., and formerly of Anna, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at his home.

        He was born Feb. 16, 1942, the son of Glenn D. and Mary F. (Clutts) Sheeley.

        He was a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. He earned bachelor and masters degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He was retired after holding several management positions during his working career.

        Carter L. Partridge

        <p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="">           </span> Mr. Carter L. Partridge, age 74 of Jonesboro, died at 9:56 P.M. Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna. He was born July 14, 1936 in Goreville, the son of Harry C. and Rosalee Foster Partridge. Carter was married Allibeth Nalley on December 27, 1956 in Anna.</strong></p>

        Republican candidate for governor pays visit to Union County Friday

        With only a few more weeks to go in the 2010 election campaign, Bill Brady is a confident candidate.

        Brady is the Republican candidate for governor of Illinois. He will face incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn in the Nov. 2 general election.

        Last Friday afternoon, Brady brought his campaign to Union County.

        He paid a visit to Union County Republican Party headquarters on South Main Street in downtown Anna.

        Brady's campaign was making a visit to Southern Illinois last week, traveling aboard the Clean Break Express, a large coach bus.
