William R. Sheeley

William Reed Sheeley, 68, of Camdenton, Mo., and formerly of Anna, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at his home.

He was born Feb. 16, 1942, the son of Glenn D. and Mary F. (Clutts) Sheeley.

He was a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. He earned bachelor and masters degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He was retired after holding several management positions during his working career.

Anna Council resignation tabled

Action on the resignation of an Anna City Council member was tabled this week.

The issue was on the agenda at the council's regular meeting, which was held Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

The council also heard concerns about pit bull dogs which were voiced by several residents of the city.

City Council Member's Resignation

Last week, Cindy Swope announced that she was going to resign as a member of the city council.

Swope is serving her first, four-year term on the council. She is one of four city commissioners.

Carter L. Partridge

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="">           </span> Mr. Carter L. Partridge, age 74 of Jonesboro, died at 9:56 P.M. Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna. He was born July 14, 1936 in Goreville, the son of Harry C. and Rosalee Foster Partridge. Carter was married Allibeth Nalley on December 27, 1956 in Anna.</strong></p>

A-J faces rival Du Quoin in first playoff game

The Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi and Ohio Division Conference high school football regular season races are over.

But, the conference battles are renewed this weekend as the IHSA high school football playoffs begin this Saturday as rivals Anna-Jonesboro travels to Du Quoin and league members Carterville visits Harrisburg in Class 3A first -round action of the IHSA playoffs.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family:"><span style="">        </span> Anita D. Bittle, age 83 of Jonesboro died Friday, October 01, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in Jonesboro Rehab & Healthcare.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family:"><span style="">        </span> Anita was born December 19, 1926 in Anna to Daniel and Doris Ferrel Frick.</span></p>

Tour de Shawnee bicycle ride planned Oct. 23 in area

The busy confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the Shawnee National Forest and Horseshoe Lake’s cypress swamps are just a few of the scenic highlights along the Tour de Shawnee, an Oct. 23 bicycle ride offering five routes through Alexander and nearby counties.

This second annual cycling event presents riders with a choice between 15-, 30-, 45-, 62- or 100-mile loops through deep Southern Illinois.

All routes start from Horseshoe Lake in Olive Branch.

Registration is $30. Children under age 14 are free with a registered adult.

Halloween activities scheduled in area

Trick-or-treat and many other activities are planned in the area for Halloween, which is Sunday, Oct. 31.

Here’s a look at some of what’s coming up:

Bethany Village, Anna

Bethany Village in Anna is making plans for an annual fundraiser which will take place on Friday, Oct. 29.

The theme of this year’s event is “Trick or Treat for Bethany.”

An annual dinner is planned on Oct. 29 at Great Boars of Fire Lodge near Anna. The dinner is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 2, is Election Day

An often bitter 2010 general election campaign comes to an end next week in Illinois.

The election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 2. Union County polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Union County Clerk Bobby Toler Jr. said he anticipates about 40 to 50 percent of the county's eligible voters to take part in next Tuesday's election.

The county has about 15,280 registered voters.

Proposed Amendment

Sentences handed down in two Union County domestic battery cases

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced this week that sentences have been handed down in two domestic battery cases.

Joshua R. Mixen, 27, of 2740 S. Lick Creek Rd., was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of aggravated domestic battery, which is a Class 2 felony.

Mixen was sentenced Tuesday, Oct. 26, by Judge Charles Cavaness following a plea of guilty which was entered in September.
