A-JCHS class of 1971 making plans for reunion in fall, 2011

Members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School class of 1971 are making plans for a reunion in the fall of 2011.

The reunion planning committee is meeting to begin initial plans for the event.

The committee is seeking addresses for the following class members:

Ginger Alsip, Virginia Armstrong, Vicki Arnold, Mildred Browning, Charles Byrnes, Betty Bush.

Charles Clark, Floyd Cook, Chris Cox, Frank Cunningham, Jack Elder, Gloria Erwin.

Patty Fisher, Ilene Gee, Cecile Haynes, Dennis Howard, Dee Joplin, Gloria Kelley.

A-J varsity volleyball squad falls to 12-10

The Anna-Jonesboro High School volleyball team lost twice in action last week.

Sparta 25-25, A-J 15-19: Jordan Edwards had 13 digs and 9 serve receives in leading visiting A-J in the loss Tuesday, Oct. 5.

Chandra Parr had 10 digs and 5 kills. Emma Basler had 8 serve receives and 4 kills.

Mackenzie Houseman had 10 assists and Amanda Conaway had 4 blocks and Katie Edwards 1.

Cheyenne Lingle had 19 good serves, an ace, 5 serve receives and 4 kills to lead the A-J junior varsity to 27-25 and 25-13 wins.

Sentences handed down in two Union County domestic battery cases

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced this week that sentences have been handed down in two domestic battery cases.

Joshua R. Mixen, 27, of 2740 S. Lick Creek Rd., was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of aggravated domestic battery, which is a Class 2 felony.

Mixen was sentenced Tuesday, Oct. 26, by Judge Charles Cavaness following a plea of guilty which was entered in September.

Creatures of the night to be featured in program

Area residents are invited to learn more about the creatures of the night at a program planned in Jonesboro.

Friday, Oct. 15, the Shawnee National Forest and Unimin Specialties Minerals Inc. plan to present a “Critter Night” program.

The free family event will be held at the Mississippi Bluffs Ranger Station at 521 N. Main St. in Jonesboro from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Those who attend the program will learn about the nocturnal animals of Illinois such as bats, coyotes and opossums through crafts, activities and games.

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 13pt;">Edward Goetz, age 68 of Jonesboro, died at 9:43 am, Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Union County Hospital in Anna.<span style=""> </span> He was born on August 14, 1942.</span></strong></p>

Local man apprehended after high-speed chase

A Union County man faced multiple citations after he was apprehended following a high-speed chase which happened Tuesday evening, Oct. 12.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay said no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Union County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robbie McGee initially was involved in the chase, which began in Anna.

Livesay said McGee attempted to make a traffic stop on a car in Anna.

Heart Walk team

Union County Hospital in Anna sponsored a Heart Walk team for the American Heart Association’s, AHA, annual event held Saturday, Oct. 2, at John A. Logan College at Carterville.

Hospital employees organized events to help raise money for the AHA. Fundraising events included a celebrity waiter dinner and a bowling tournament. The hospital raised $4,833 and received the top award for a company with fewer than 500 employees. 

Eva Mae Nance

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="">         </span> <span style="">      </span>Mrs. Eva Mae Nance, age 77, of Cobden, died at 11:45 A.M. Friday, October 29, 2010 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born August 8, 1933 in Pomona, the daughter of William Butler and Ruby Forby Cobb. She married Lawrence Stanley “Jim” Nance on June 28, 1952 in Piggott, AR. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2008.</strong></p>

Dongola Colorfest activities planned

ColorFest activities are planned Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10, in Dongola.

Activities will be at the Dongola Ball Park and uptown.

Saturday's schedule includes:

Dongola Fire Department pancake breakfast, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the fire department.

Dongola all men's softball tournament, starting at 8 a.m. at the ball park.

Parade, 10 a.m.

Dog show, uptown, 11:30 a.m., with prizes for best trick, best dressed and cutest.

Little Miss Dongola pageant, uptown, 1 p.m.
