PAST planning to offer ColorFest walking tours in Stinson Library area

The PAST organization of Union County invites area residents to take a walk in the neighborhood around Stinson Memorial Library in Anna – and step back in the community's past.

The walk is a new event which PAST plans to introduce for visitors to the 2010 ColorFest celebration.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, guests are invited to stop by the PAST booth at a flea market planned at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

Heart Walk team

Union County Hospital in Anna sponsored a Heart Walk team for the American Heart Association’s, AHA, annual event held Saturday, Oct. 2, at John A. Logan College at Carterville.

Hospital employees organized events to help raise money for the AHA. Fundraising events included a celebrity waiter dinner and a bowling tournament. The hospital raised $4,833 and received the top award for a company with fewer than 500 employees. 

A-J boys’ golf team fourth at conference

Anna-Jonesboro finished in 4th place in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Confererence high school boys’ golf match played at Stone Creek Country Club at Makanda Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Nashville won with a score of 324. A-J finished with 390.

Brent Goforth, who earned all-conference honors with a 6th place score of 84, paced the Wildcats’ effort.

Tyler Vaughn was next for A-J with 93, followed by Brock Goforth 106, Chris Baggott 107 and Joseph Tingley 109

Carl Baltzell

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="">           </span> Mr. Carl <span style=""> </span>Baltzell, age 96 of Cobden, died at 12:06 A.M. Saturday October 30, 2010 at Herrin Hospital in Herrin, Illinois. He was born April 2, 1914 in Alto Pass, the son of Everett D. and Eva A. Lindsey Baltzell. He married Bessie Hedgpeth in 1935 in Jonesboro. She preceded him in death in 1999.</strong></p>

Cobden Pre-K begins Oct. 20

Pre-kindergarten classes for Cobden students ages three to five will begin Oct. 20.

The school offers two sessions. The morning class will meet from 8 to 11 a.m. and the afternoon class meets from noon to 3 p.m.

        1960 Dongola class reunion set

        Members of the 1960 graduating class at Dongola High School are planning to celebrate their 50-year reunion during the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10.

        Reunion organizers invite anyone who knew class members then to bring lawn chairs and visit between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at the home of Marshall Burns at 9230 State Route 146 East, Dongola.


              Harvest Celebration held at area’s newest winery

              Lincoln Heritage Winery, the area’s newest winery, opened Friday, Oct. 15, with their Harvest Celebration.

              Located a half mile off old U.S. Route 51 on Kaolin Road, the winery is located at 772 Kaolin Rd., midway between Anna and Cobden.

              Nine wines were available for tasting and complimentary appetizers were served at the celebration.

              A crowd of over 70 people filled the tasting room and spilled out onto the patio overlooking the vineyard.

              Kohlers observe 65th anniversary

              Kenneth and Dorthy Kohler of Anna celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

              The Kohlers were married on Oct. 20, 1945, in Jonesboro.

              Their children are Linda Webb and Sharon Kohler Futrell (David).

              Their grandchildren are K.W. Carter and Tim Sadler (deceased).

              Kenneth is retired from the Illinois State Police. He is a World War II veteran and formerly served as mayor of Anna. Dorothy is a homemaker.

              The couple would welcome cards and words of blessing from friends.

              Anna Council resignation tabled

              Action on the resignation of an Anna City Council member was tabled this week.

              The issue was on the agenda at the council's regular meeting, which was held Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

              The council also heard concerns about pit bull dogs which were voiced by several residents of the city.

              Last week, Cindy Swope announced that she was going to resign as a member of the city council.

              Swope is serving her first, four-year term on the council. She is one of four city commissioners.
