Kohlers observe 65th anniversary

Kenneth and Dorthy Kohler of Anna celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The Kohlers were married on Oct. 20, 1945, in Jonesboro.

Their children are Linda Webb and Sharon Kohler Futrell (David).

Their grandchildren are K.W. Carter and Tim Sadler (deceased).

Kenneth is retired from the Illinois State Police. He is a World War II veteran and formerly served as mayor of Anna. Dorothy is a homemaker.

The couple would welcome cards and words of blessing from friends.

A-J, Benton both must win Friday

The Benton High School football team is facing a similar situation to its opponent as it hosts Anna-Jonesboro in the final regular season game for both teams this Friday.

“The winner is going to get in and the loser is out,” A-J coach Brett Detering said. “They have lost their last two games to the top two teams in their league.”

Cobden plans to leave SEC

Cobden High School is planning to leave the South Egyptian Conference, SEC.

The Cobden Unit School District 17 Board of Education unanimously approved the move this week.

A vote on the move was taken at Monday night’s regular meeting of the school board.

The move is effective in 2012-2013. Cobden will become an independent in high school sports.

Cobden follows Goreville and Vienna in leaving the SEC.

Meridian, Egyptian, Century, Shawnee, Joppa and Dongola remain as members of the conference.

Harvest Celebration held at area’s newest winery

Lincoln Heritage Winery, the area’s newest winery, opened Friday, Oct. 15, with their Harvest Celebration.

Located a half mile off old U.S. Route 51 on Kaolin Road, the winery is located at 772 Kaolin Rd., midway between Anna and Cobden.

Nine wines were available for tasting and complimentary appetizers were served at the celebration.

A crowd of over 70 people filled the tasting room and spilled out onto the patio overlooking the vineyard.

Anna Council resignation tabled

Action on the resignation of an Anna City Council member was tabled this week.

The issue was on the agenda at the council's regular meeting, which was held Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

The council also heard concerns about pit bull dogs which were voiced by several residents of the city.

City Council Member's Resignation

Last week, Cindy Swope announced that she was going to resign as a member of the city council.

Swope is serving her first, four-year term on the council. She is one of four city commissioners.

Sentences handed down in two Union County domestic battery cases

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced this week that sentences have been handed down in two domestic battery cases.

Joshua R. Mixen, 27, of 2740 S. Lick Creek Rd., was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of aggravated domestic battery, which is a Class 2 felony.

Mixen was sentenced Tuesday, Oct. 26, by Judge Charles Cavaness following a plea of guilty which was entered in September.
