A-J rally falls short in state playoff game

The Wildcats trailed 21-0 before fighting back to within six points in a 33-21 loss to Mt. Carmel in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A high school football playoffs at The Pit last Saturday afternoon.

“I’m so proud of our kids,” A-J football coach Brett Detering said. “They continued to scratch and claw. There was no quit in them. It was a fight to the final whistle.”

The Wildcats finished as the last team from deep Southern Illinois to remain  in the playoffs and ended their season with a 9-3 record.

James Donald Simmons

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. James Donald Simmons, age 71, of Anna, died at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2011 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. He was born December 7, 1939 in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Donald and Charlean Pryor Simmons. He married Carol E. Sears on March 31, 1968 in Bedford, IN.</span></strong></p>

Annual holiday bazaar planned

The ninth annual Union County Historical and Genealogy Society Christmas Bazaar is set to open at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

The bazaar is scheduled to continue Nov. 25, 26, Dec. 3 and 10.  Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The bazaar is held in the historic DuBois Building at 117 S. Appleknocker next to the Union County Museum in downtown Cobden. 

New, gently used, upscale and collectible holiday related items and gifts will be available for sale. 

Honoring our veterans

As a community and as a nation, we joined together on Friday, November 11, to honor the brave men and women who have served in the nation's armed forces.

On the day before, Jonesboro School paid tribute to veterans with a special program. Over the weekend, those who served during the Korean War were honored during a ceremony held at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

Jonesboro woman sentenced on two felony charges

A Union County woman has been sentenced to serve time in prison on two felony charges.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Tuesday, Nov. 8, that Liberty K. Batson, 33, of Jonesboro was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Batson was sentenced on charges that included one count of continuing financial crimes enterprise, a Class 1 felony; and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

Jonesboro players honored

Three players from the Jonesboro School junior high baseball team have been selected to the All-Southern Illini Conference Team.

Those selected to the first team from Jonesboro were Isaac Pender and Wade Haire. Garrett Nimmo was selected to the second team.

Pender batted .611 and had 15 doubles, 26 RBIs and 37 stolen bases. He had a 5-4 pitching record and a 4.77 ERA.

Haire batted .534 and had 21 RBIs. He had a 2-3 pitching record and a 2.20 ERA.

Nimmo had a .380 batting average and stole 29 bases.

Illinois State Police conduct special enforcement patrols

Illinois State Police 22 conducted several special traffic enforcement efforts during October.

District 22 has its headquarters at Ullin. Union County is in the district.

The state police released the following enforcement figures from occupant restraint enforcement patrols which were conducted Oct. 24:

Safety belt violations, 26. Total citations, 35. Total warnings, 31.

Roadside safety checks were held during the late evening hours of Oct. 15 and the early morning hours of Oct. 16. The following results were reported:

PAST kicks off holiday season with home tour

The PAST organization of Union County plans to host its annual Holiday Tour of Homes this weekend.

The tour is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

The tour will feature Jason Short's Keyhole House, Michael and Jane Pingle-Painter's country estate, Laura McMahon's Shannon Lake Estates home, Camp Ground Church and the PAST Place House.

Admission is $5 per home or $15 for all five locations, homes, displays and refreshments.
