Maring’s oil paintings featured in exhibition

At the age of 7, Wil Maring broke into her dad’s oil paint set so she could paint a horse on a scrap of luan plywood.

Now, the popular musician and songwriter is having her most recent oil paintings of Southern Illinois featured in the third annual “Off the Wall” Holiday Group Artist Exhibition in Cobden.

“It seems like I have always painted,” Maring says. “Since that first time I have had a fascination for the process.  I love the buttery feel of oil paint on a good brush, and I love the smell of paint and turpentine.”

Lick Creek boys win second straight title

The Lick Creek School junior high boys’ basketball team won its own invitational tournament for the second consecutive year. The invitational was played in October.

Following are game summaries

Lick Creek 60, Dongola 43: Zach Parr scored 33 points to lead Lick Creek to the win in the championship game Oct. 21.

Hunter Garver added 13 points for Lick Creek. Jake Parr followed with 6 points, Ethan Friebel 5 and Logan Mattingly 3.

Kyle Cox scored 19 points to lead Dongola.

Cobden Women’s Club hears program about local museum

The Cobden Women’s Club met Friday afternoon, Oct. 21, at the home of Mary Sue Treece with Lou Ann Hartline as cohostess.

The meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag.

The program was given by Pat Brumleve about the 50th anniversary of the Union County Musuem in Cobden.

The museum was opened in 1961 by Charles Thomas, Joe Thomas and Conrad Baggott. It was then known as The Cobden Museum and was housed in a small building in downtown Cobden.

At first it was primarily used to display the men’s collection of Indian artifacts.

School consolidation meeting now Nov. 22

Proposed reorganization of four Union County public school districts will be the focus of a rescheduled public hearing.

The rescheduled hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The hearing will take place in the courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse.

The reorganization proposal involves the Lick Creek, Anna, Jonesboro and Anna-Jonesboro Community High School districts.

The hearing originally had been scheduled for Tuesday evening, Nov. 1.

Emmett Lee Duncan

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Emmett Lee Duncan, age 67 of Anna, died at 12:37 a.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011 at his home in Anna. He was born January 6, 1944 in Thomaston, Georgia, the son of Emmett Lee and Sarah Chaney Duncan. He married Karen Wright on August 16, 1975 in Michigan City, IN.</span></strong></p>

PAWS dinner/auction planned Saturday evening

Items from local artists, crafters, businesses, friends and supporters are arriving daily and will all be offered for bids Saturday evening, Nov. 12, at the 18th Annual Auction For Animals.  

The event is presented by Pets Are Worth Saving Inc., PAWS, a local animal welfare organization. 

The auction is being held at the Great Boars Lodge on Kratzinger Hollow Road  near Anna, with the doors opening at 5 p.m.

Dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is catered by the Great Boars of Fire.

World War II veteran's harrowing tale recalled

(Editor's note: Clara Tucker of McClure shared a special story about an area veteran. Excerpts from the story, which was written by Shannon Woodworth, follow.)

Veterans Day is an occasion to salute war veterans like Jesse Earl Anderson, one of only 453 soldiers to survive a prisoner-of-war death march during World War II.

Anderson, of McClure, recounted the march. He said he lost 100 pounds, it claimed the lives of 3,601 comrades and lasted three months.

Anna church to host dinner on Thanksgiving

An Anna church is planning to host a community Thanksgiving dinner.

Anna Heights Baptist Church is planning to host the dinner, which will be served at noon on Thanksgiving Day. The holiday is Thursday, Nov. 24.

The dinner will be in the church’s Family Life Center at 100 Turner Ave.

The dinner will be free. Those who are interested in attending the dinner are asked to call the church office at 833-0523 prior to Nov. 20 to make a reservation.
