Dr. Dolores Gore

Lincoln site in Jonesboro to reopen

The Lincoln Memorial Picnic Area in Jonesboro is scheduled to be open to the public again as of Friday,  Oct. 14, the U.S. Forest Service reports.

On Friday, the U.S. Forest Service/Shawnee National Forest plan to host a family event called Critter Night.

Critter Night will feature Illinois’ nocturnal animals. 

Critter Night activities begin at 5 p.m. Special guest Bev Shofstall of Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is scheduled to give a live owl presentation. The event is open to the public. 

A-J girls’ golf team wins match

Cortni Hicks scored 43 to lead Anna-Jonesboro to the win in a three-team high school girls’ golf match at the Union County Country Club Course in Anna Monday, Oct. 3.

The Lady Wildcats won with a score of 191. Vienna was next with 220 and Harrisburg finished third with 221.

Other scoring for A-J were Abby Miller with 46; followed by Allison Connor 52; Lexi Goins 55; and Amanda Halter 58.

Hicks scored 92 and Miller 93 to lead A-J in the girls’ golf regional held at the Union County Country Club Course in Anna Wednesday, Oct. 5.

A-J volleyball falls at regional

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School volleyball team’s 2011 season came to an end Tuesday night.

A-J fell to Carterville in Class 2A regional tournament action at Vienna.

Carterville posted 25-20, 25-17 wins in the match.

Carterville is slated to face Murphysboro for the regional tournament championship Thursday, today, at Vienna.


        ColorFest activities scheduled in Jonesboro

        Jonesboro plans to have plenty of ColorFest activities Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8.

        Activities will take place on the Jonesboro Square.

        Food and craft vendors will be on the square Friday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

        (Vendor application information is available at Jonesboro City Hall.)

        Food vendors include the Jonesboro Fire Department, the Jonesboro Public Library and others.

        Music is planned both nights.

        Saturday variety show to spotlight area talent

        The Southend StumpJumpers plan to present their 14th annual variety show Saturday night, Oct. 8.

        The show will be performed in the auditorium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

        Proceeds will go to Union County Relay for Life.

        A preshow performance by the country band Backdraft starts at 6:30 p.m.

        This year, the performing group plans to reenact comedy from the 1950s and 1960s television show "Gunsmoke" with the likes of Marshal Matt Dillon, Miss Kitty, Chester and the hillbilly deputy Festus Hagen.

        Edgar Henry

        Edgar Henry, 94, of Anna, died at 6:35 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at his home.

        He was born on Jan. 20, 1917, in Johnson County.

        Mr. Henry was raised by his grandparents, the late Nathan and Lucinda Henry.

        He married Louise Moore in Jackson, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1939, and she survives.

        He moved to Chicago shortly after he and Louise were married and worked as a street car conductor. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart.

        Chester Dale Coder

        <p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Chester Dale Coder, age 87 of Anna, died at 10:26 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Marion. He was born December 26, 1925 in North Liberty, IN, the son of Sylvester and Ethel Coffman Coder. He married Karen L. Nelson on June 10, 1987 in Las Vegas, NV.</span></strong></p>
