Brief Editorial Comment: Postal increase announced

The U.S. Postal Service has announced yet another price increase beginning in April. This comes with the guarantee of poorer service.

Obviously, this impacts delivery of this newspaper which is unfortunate for loyal subscribers. And, consider the millions of others who have trusted the Postal Service for timely delivery at a reasonable cost. Bank notices, utility bills and tax statements mailed late will result in millions in finance charges. Medications may cause health issues if delivered by mail. On and on.

It is not the fault of your friendly mailman, or the local postmaster, and cannot be blamed totally on the top officials of the Postal Service, although many of their decisions have been poor.

Congress is to blame. More than $70 billion have been drained from the Postal Service in inaccurately calculated pension allocations. This money goes into the general revenue of the government. Congress refuses to change the system because of what it would do to the already struggling budget.

Left alone, as the U.S. Postal Service was incorporated in 1971, the institution could stand and survive it's many problems. It is not getting taxpayer support, as it should, rather it is supporting excessive spending by the federal government.
