Brief editorial comment: U.S. democracy

There is no doubt that the democracy in the United States is the best of all the world's nations. However, the election system of our public officials could stand serious review.

Term limits

Those in power claim that if citizens don't want them to stay in office "just vote them out." Ain't that easy. They have the power and political support which sometimes makes it near impossible, i.e. Representative Michael Madigan, speaker of the Illinois House. Long overdue to be replaced.

Constant campaigning

Today I got a letter from Congressman Mike Bost requesting support for the next election. Just elected in November, he is already posturing for his next run for office. Honestly, I feel sorry for the elected officials who are constantly under the gun for reeelection. Their positions and votes seem just another effort to stay in office.

Illinois redistricting

A political joke every ten years. The only people who agree with it are those in power at the time.

I applaud those individuals who want to serve as public officials at the local, state and national level. Yet, they must remember, it should not be a career.
