Carla Serantoni honored as teacher of year

Carla Cunningham Serantoni, formerly of Union County, has been honored as the high school teacher of the year for the Chicago District of the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

She is a 1966 graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Serantoni is a national board certified teacher. She is department chairperson for the physical education department at Lane Tech High School in the Chicago area.

She has received numerous grants which have allowed her to expand the Lane Tech fitness center to include Tri-Fit, pedometers, heart rate monitors and blood pressure machines.

She and her Lane Tech team recently organized a Jogathon which raised $10,000 which allowed the department to buy 20 Apple computers. Students now are creating public service announcements using iMovie.
