Charles S. Horecker
Charles S. Horecker, formerly of Anna, was born on Feb. 28, 1979, in Carbondale.
He died Friday evening, Dec. 11, 2009, in an automobile accident.
He attended Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and Crossroads prepatory in St. Louis. He graduated from the University of Chicago with honors in 2001. He furthered his education at Yale University.
Then he became a traveler and student of the world through extensive travels in India, China, the Middle East and all of Southeast Asia. While in Beijing he taught at the University of Beijing.
He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Horecker; a sister, Rebecca and husband Eric Shirrell; a brother, David J. Horecker and half-siblings Leslie and husband Tom Hankinson, Sheryl and husband Bill Hinchcliff, Beth and husband Tom Dotson, Julie Horecker and life mate Kelly Whitlock, Lennie and husband Abe Pender, Lisa and Leonard Horecker; his grandfather, Dr. Stanley E. Harris Jr.; local cousins Margaret-Jane (Ethan), Marion (Mustafa) and Alice (Jake); many other cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Leonard Horecker; by a sister, Theresa Watkins; and his grandmother, Jane P. Harris.
A wake was held at 98 Edgewood Ln. in Carbondale Tuesday, Dec. 15, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The funeral was at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., with graveside services at noon at the family plot in Murphysboro.
Memorials can be made to Doctors without Borders or a tree can be planted in his name.
