Christmas in Cobden 'tremendous success'

An early December "Christmas in Cobden" celebration was a "tremendous success," village officials said.

The event was discussed at last week's regular meeting of the Cobden Village Board of Trustees.

The meeting was Monday night, Dec. 7, at Cobden Village Hall.

The holiday celebration was sponsored by the Cobden Community and Business Association and the village.

Hundreds of people came to "Christmas in Cobden." A wide range of activities were held.

Village officials noted that many comments were received regarding the manner in which the whole community participated.

In other business at last week's board meeting:

Utility Policy: The board approved a utility late charge policy for the winter of 2010.

Late charges will be waived if 50 percent of the entire amount which is due for all utilities is paid prior to the 15th of the month.

If the total utility bill is not paid by the end of the month, late charges will be applied to the balance due and services will be disconnected after the required notice is given.

Scholarship: Dale Millis Auction Service has donated the proceeds from an auction he held in October in Cobden for a scholarship fund for Cobden High School students. The amount of the donation was $700.

The board voted to contribute $300 to go with Millis' $700 to create two, $500 scholarships for the 2010 school year.

Mayor Molly Beckley also appointed a scholarship committee to prepare a proposal for managing and distributing the scholarship funds, including any additional donations which may be received.

Village board members Patrick Brumleve, Frances Swedlund and Dennis Maze were appointed to the committee.

Motor Fuel Tax Funds: The board approved a resolution appropriating $70,000 in state motor fuel tax funds for street and highway maintenance work during 2010.

Donation to Fire Department: A donation to the Cobden Fire Department was noted.

The Cobden Runners'/Walkers' Club donated $100 to the fire department.

The donation was made to the fire department for its assistance with a Cobden Peach Festival Run/Walk held in August. Proposals Accepted: The board accepted a proposal from Adams Construction in the amount of $1,395 for maintenance and repairs to the control room at the reservoir, the generator room at the reservoir and the bulk sales building.

The board also accepted a proposal in the amount of $700 from Rick Ehlers to replace the double walk-in doors at the village's water plant with a garage door.

Handrails: The board voted to pay Adams Construction an additional amount of $604 for installation of handrails on Front Street and Appleknocker Drive.

The additional amount was the result of necessary changes in construction, design, materials and the varying levels of the handrails.

Employee Hired: The board approved the hiring of Shayne Eddleman as a full-time village employee for a six-month probationary period.

Cub Scouts: The board voted to permit local Cub Scouts to use the village hall for weekly meetings.
