Cobden defeats A-J in nonconference play
Kayla Quertermous scored 17 points and pulled down 4 rebounds to lead host Cobden to 50-27 win over Anna-Jonesboro in nonconference high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 9.
Ana Duda added 16 points and 3 rebounds for the Appleknockers.
Taylor Orsburn had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Mara Hackethal had 2 points and 8 rebounds. Mariah Piper had 2 points.
Jesse Stone had 10 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Lady Wildcats.
Chandra Parr added 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Destiny Dillow had 5 points and 3 rebounds. Rachel Hayden had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Valerie Pender had 7 rebounds and Emma Basler 2.
The Appleknockers were 10 of 18 in shot attempts from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range and 19 of 26 from the free throw line.
The Lady Wildcats were 8 of 46 in shot attempts from the floor, 0 of 8 from 3-point range and 10 of 17 from the free throw line.
“We came out flat and stayed flat,” A-J head coach George Lenon said.
Cobden erupted for a 16-2 first quarter lead and was ahead 23-15 at the half.
The Appleknockers made a 17-6 run in the third quarter to build a 40-21 lead headed into the final period.
“We needed a game like that,” Cobden head coach Travis Foster said. “The third quarter was big for us.”
A-J, which fell to 6-11, is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at home against Herrin.
Cobden, which improved to 12-3 overall, is scheduled to play Elverado at home Friday and Saturday at Shawnee.
