Cobden falls, Shawnee wins in SEC tournament action

Goreville held off Cobden 42-35 to win the championship of the South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball tournament at Egyptian Wednesday, Feb. 3.

The game was tied 9-9 after one quarter. The Lady Blackcats pulled ahead 16-11 at the half. The Appleknockers fought back to trail 24-23 headed in to the final period. Goreville outscored Cobden 18-12 in the last frame.

Ana Duda, Katelyn Wiggs and Kayla Quertermous scored 7 points apiece to lead the Appleknockeres. Bekah Russell added 6 points, Taylor Orsburn 5, Mara Hackethal 3 and Maria Piper 2.

Cobden, 21-4, is scheduled to play this week in the Class 1A regional hosted by the Appleknockers.

Shawnee 58, Century 49: Kaylee Boston scored 22 points to lead the Lady Reds to third place.

Taylor Ellis added 13 points for Shawnee. Jonnie Ellet and Jordan Johnson added 6 points apiece, Reagan Brown and Jessie Reynolds 4 each.

Shawnee built an 18-15 first quarter lead and was ahead 37-27 at the half. The Lady Reds were ahead 44-35 going into the final period.

Shawnee, which improved to 10-9 overall, is scheduled to play this week in the Cobden Class 1A regional tournament.
