Cobden girls win third straight title

The Cobden High School  girl’s basketball team defeated Shawnee 48-29 to win the Lady Bobcat Tournament at Meridian for the third consecutive year Saturday, Nov. 21.

“We played pretty well,” first-year Cobden head coach Travis Foster said. “I was pretty pleased with the effort.”

The Appleknockers built a 12-2 first quarter lead and held on for the win.

“We had a great first quarter,” Foster said.

Cobden led 20-10 at the half and 35-16 going into the final period.

Ana Duda led the way with 17 points for the Appleknockers.

Kayla Quertermous added 9 points, Taylor Orsburn 8, Mara Hackethal 6 and Bekah Russell and Katelyn Wiggs 4 apiece.

Kaylee Boston had 10 points to lead the Lady Reds. Jessie Reynolds added 9 points, Reagan Brown 4, Taylor Ellis 3, Jordan  Johnson 2 and Alexa Hileman 1.

Cobden’s Duda was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Teammates Orsburn and Hackethal were selected to the all-tourament team. The Lady Reds’ Boston was  also selected to the team.

Shawnee fell to 2-1 overall.

Cobden, 3-0, was scheduled to have played Tuesday at home against Pope County.
