Cobden, A-J girls advance in softball Shawnee, A-J boys fall in sectional finals

Two of the four Union County teams competing in sectional play advanced Saturday.

Defending state champion Cobden downed Elverado 2-1 in an 11-inning pitching duel to win the Class 1A sectional tournament at Trico. Cobden advances to super-sectional play at Carbondale to meet Cumberland at 4:30 Monday at SIUC's Charlotte West Stadium. Cobden's season record is 29-4.

Anna-Jonesboro won the Class 2A sectional tournament at Pinckneyville, defeating Carmi-White County 6-0 Saturday. The Lady Wildcats, now 27-4, will take on Piasa Southwestern at 4:30 p.m. Monday at SIU-Edwardsville. The Lady Wildcats are now 27-4 for the season.

The Shawnee boys ended their baseball season in the 1-A sectional finals at Cobden Saturday, falling to Marissa 4-0. Shawnee ended its season with a 20-7 record.

Anna-Jonesboro's late-season baseball resurgence came to a halt Saturday at Harrisburg when the Wildcats lost in the 2-A sectional finals to Herrin 5-2.
