The Cobden Lady Appleknockers overcame another extreme test to nail down a second consecutive Illinois Class 1A state softball championship.
Cobden defeated Alexis United, the same team they edged last year, to win the title Saturday at Peoria.
It was a record-setting match. Cobden needed 19 innings to nail down the 1-0 win which came on a game-winning hit by Kayla Quertermous. Cobden prevailed against another record setting performance by Alexis United pitcher Katie Bartelsen who recorded 34 strikeouts in the contest.
