Cobden Women’s Club hears program about local museum

The Cobden Women’s Club met Friday afternoon, Oct. 21, at the home of Mary Sue Treece with Lou Ann Hartline as cohostess.

The meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag.

The program was given by Pat Brumleve about the 50th anniversary of the Union County Musuem in Cobden.

The museum was opened in 1961 by Charles Thomas, Joe Thomas and Conrad Baggott. It was then known as The Cobden Museum and was housed in a small building in downtown Cobden.

At first it was primarily used to display the men’s collection of Indian artifacts.

When local residents found out about the museum, they began to donate local historic items. Soon the small building was full of historic items.

When Charles Thomas died in 1983, his grandson, Pat Brumleve, took over the operation. Later the Union County Historical Society offered their assistance and helped with the museum’s operation.

In 2006 the museum moved to the historically significant DuBois building in downtown Cobden.

The museum still contains Indian artifacts, historical items and a large collection of Kirkpatrick pottery. Every so often special exhibits are shown. It is now known as the Union County Museum.

A devotion was then given by Mary Sue Treece. She read a selection about how angels are sent to strengthen people.

She gave an example of a woman who did so much for her family and felt used. She had a dream in which angels were doing her jobs, and Christ told her that she could be those angels. Fom then on she did not complain. Divine service can be done here on earth.

The club visited the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna in September. Club members helped residents play bingo, provided monetary prizes and served refreshments.

The club will again be donating children’s coats to the Pregnancy Matters Center.

The club has been donating to the Angel Food Ministries and is sorry it is being discontinued.

Pennies for Veterans were collected.

Members are asked to bring coffee to the November meeting, which will be at the home of Ruth Hardin. The coffee will be donated to the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.
