Fatal accident occurs Monday near Jonesboro

A Southern Illinois woman sustained fatal injuries in a single-vehicle traffic accident which happened Monday morning, Nov. 14, in Union County.

The accident left one other person with major injuries.

Doris Howell, 67, of Grand Tower, was fatally injured in the accident.

Howell was a passenger in a car which was being driven by Gene Jobe, 69, of Cobden. Jobe sustained major injuries.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay said the accident happened at about 11 a.m. Monday on State Route 146, about 1 mile west of Jonesboro.

The car was traveling toward Jonesboro when the accident happened. The car left the highway and struck a tree.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, the sheriff said.

Both Howell and Jobe were transported to Union County Hospital in Anna for treatment. Howell later died of injuries she sustained in the accident.

Jobe was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he remained in critical condition as of Tuesday.
