Fatal wreck Saturday near Cobden

A Carbondale man sustained fatal injuries in a single-vehicle traffic accident which happened early Saturday afternoon in Union County.

Authorities identified the victim as Larry W. Lipe, 58.

The accident happened at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday in a sharp curve along old U.S. Highway 51 just north of Cobden.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported that Lipe was driving a motorcycle south on Highway 51 when he lost control of the vehicle.

The motorcycle ran off the road and struck a culvert.

Shari Crockett, 61, of Carbondale, was a passenger on the motorcycle. She sustained major injuries.

The sheriff’s office reported that both Lipe and Crockett was transported by helicopter to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Lipe died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

Crockett’s condition was not immediately available.
