Fifty Years Ago,March 5, 1959

Last Sunday, March 1, 1959, will be a remembered date for the citizens of the Cobden community and the surrounding area. More than five hundred people gathered to dedicate the community's new Medical Center and to welcome the new physician, Dr. Helmut Hartmann.

Approximately 2,400 letters are being run off and mailed this week to Union County residents asking for donations toward a $3,000 quota in a drive to erect a chapel at Anna State Hospital.

Members of the New Industry committee of the Chamber of Commerce gave members attending the meeting held at the Bunny Bread auditorium Monday night something to really think about and also some definite action. They presented proposals that proved that Anna is not just going to sit back and let the rest of the cities in Southern Illinois get all the new industries.

The election of school directors and members of boards of education will be held on April 12, 1959.

Only a few candidates have filed for election to office as members of the various school boards in Union County.

Twenty-five years ago on March 5, R.L. Rich opened one of Southern Illinois' most modern shoe stores at 306 S. Main St., in Anna. The store is now located at 200 S. Main and has one of the most modern fronts in the shoe business.

Mounds Douglass and Cobden emerged victors in upper bracket first round play of the Anna-Jonesboro regional tourney Tuesday night.

Vegetable growers of Union County will meet tonight (Thursday) in the Farm Bureau building in Jonesboro.

The annual Founder's Day Tea of the Lincoln P.T.A. was held Tuesday, February 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the school gym.

Members of the Veterans of World War I, Union County Barracks 344, and members of the Ladies Auxiliary will meet in regular monthly session, Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m., in the American Legion Community Center in Anna.

From "Glancing Back," 30 Years Ago, March 8, 1929: Lewis Brothers Bakery have moved into their new quarters in the building recently erected for them by A.A. Crowell on the corner of North Main and East Chestnut Sts., this week.

20 Years Ago, March 3, 1939: An electric cross 70 feet high with a cross arm 40 feet long is to guide church people this year on their third annual pilgrimage to the top of Bald Knob near Alto Pass to greet the rising sun Easter morning with another program of prayer and song.
