Four Union Countyteams win regionals

Four teams representing Union County high schools played for regional championships last weekend.

All four of the local teams were winners in Illinois High School Association 2009 postseason action.

In a Class 1A softball regional championship game played Saturday in Cobden, the host Lady Appleknockers defeated Century for the title.

The Anna-Jonesboro Lady Wildcats claimed a Class 2A softball championship Saturday in Vienna. A-J edged Carterville for the championship.

In high school baseball action, host Shawnee defeated Meridian to win a Class 1A regional title.

Anna-Jonesboro scored an upset win over Harrisburg to win a Class 2A regional championship Saturday in Carterville.

With the victories, all four teams advanced to sectional action scheduled for this week.

Cobden is scheduled to play Pope County at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, today, in the Trico 1A softball sectional.

In 2A softball sectional play, A-J was scheduled to face host Pinckneyville Wednesday afternoon.

Shawnee was scheduled to play Goreville Wednesday afternoon in the Cobden 1A baseball sectional.

A-J is scheduled to face Mt. Carmel at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, today, in 2A sectional play at Harrisburg.
