A-J finishes second at Harrisburg Tourney
The Anna-Jonesboro High School boys’ basketball team closed out the week with a second place finish and a 3-1 record in the Harrisburg Tournament Saturday, Dec. 4.
The Wildcats had Cody Livesay, Brady Wright and Tylor Duckworth selected to the all-tournament team.
Results from tournament games follow:
A-J 55, Carmi-White County 44: With Wright and Travis Smith scoring back-to-back 3-pointers to lead the way, the Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 11-0 in overtime for the win in the final tournament game Saturday, Dec. 4.
Duckworth scored 19 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to lead A-J. Smith, who had 17 points and a rebound, was 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Wright had 13 points and a rebound. Dalton Baker added 4 points and 2 rebounds. Livesay had 2 points and a rebound.
A-J led 12-10 after one quarter before Carmi-White County fought back to pull ahead 25-23 at the half. The Wildcats trailed 36-34 going into the final period.
A-J was 11 of 22 in shot attempts from the floor, 7 of 14 from 3-point range and 14 of 19 from the free throw line.
Harrisburg 71, A-J 60: The Wildcats couldn’t recover in the loss after falling behind early Friday, Dec. 3.
“We dug ourselves a hole early that we couldn’t get out of,” A-J coach Mike Chamness said.
The Bulldogs led 23-13 at the end of one quarter and were on top 39-27 at the half. Harrisburg led 56-43 going into the final period.
Wright had 21 points and 6 rebounds for the Wildcats. Livesay added 21 points and 4 rebounds.
The Wildcats were 21 of 30 in shot attempts from the field, 4 of 11 from 3-point range and 6 of 10 from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs were 22 of 39 in shot attempts from the floor, 4 of 11 from 3-point range and 12 of 22 from the free throw line.
A-J 48, Hamilton County 33: Livesay had 22 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to the tournament win Wednesday, Dec. 1.
Duckworth had 8 points and 6 rebounds for A-J. Wright had 7 points and 5 rebounds. Baker had 4 points. Alex LeFevre had 3 points and a rebound. Brady Carter had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Jarid Veronesi had 2 points and a rebound.
The Wildcats were 8 of 28 in shot attempts from the field, 4 of 7 from 3-point range and 17 of 20 from the free throw line.
“I’m pretty pleased with our effort in the tournament,” Chamness said. “I thought we played well together and we shot free throws well.”
A-J plays again Friday at Pinckneyville and Saturday against Meridian in the Cobden Shootout.
