A-J opens with win at Benton tournament
The Anna-Jonesboro High School girls’ basketball team split in opening-round action of the Benton Invitational tournament Saturday, Dec. 26.
Following are game summaries:
A-J 48, Hamilton County 42: Chandra Parr scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers, to power the Wildcats to the opening game win.
Valerie Pender added 10 points, Rachel Hayden 7, Destiny Dillow 6, Emma Basler 5 and Jesse Stone 4.
The Lady Wildcats led 13-10 after one quarter and 25-14 at the half. A-J took a 41-24 advantage going into the final period.
The Lady Wildcats were 13 of 35 in shot attempts from the field, 3 of 10 from 3-point range and 12 of 17 from the free throw line.
Carbondale 38, A-J 24: The Lady Wildcats fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in the second-round loss.
The Lady Terriers led 15-6 after one quarter and 26-14 at the half. Carbondale led 34-21 going into the final period.
Parr had 6 points to lead A-J. Dillow and Pender had 5 points apiece, Stone 4 and Hayden and Basler 2 apiece.
A-J was 9 of 41 in shot attempts from the field, 0 of 8 from 3-point range and 6 of 9 from the charity stripe.
“You can’t shoot 19 percent and have 20 turnovers and win a game,” A-J coach George Lenon said.
A-J, 3-10, was scheduled to play Elverado in tournament action earlier this week. The tournament concluded Tuesday.
