Lick Creek girls finish third at state track meet

The Lick Creek School girls’ track team earned a third place finish at the recent Class S State Track Meet in Salem.

With the 3rd place finish, Lick Creek completed a sweep in which they placed in all four sports they competed in at the Class S level.

The softball team started the year with a 4th place finish, followed by basketball taking 3rd place and volleyball team losing in the state championship and taking 2nd place.

The track team had the nucleus for an outstanding year on paper. With a difficult spring in which it rained daily and cold temperatures, it became a challenge. The girls pulled together and practiced in the gymnasium and at the Anna-Jonesboro track facility when they could.

Aviston finished in 1st place for the second straight year and was followed by St. Libory in 2nd and Lick Creek in 3rd place.

Here is the breakdown for Lick Creek by event:

Chandra Parr finished 2nd in the 100 hurdles with her best time of 17.83 seconds.

The 400 meter relay team of Rebecca Mitchell, Amanda Conaway, Nina Mattingly and Chandra Parr of Lick Creek finished with a time of 56.30, good for 4th place.

Rebecca Mitchell placed 4th in the 200 meter dash with a good 28.45 finish.

Kimberly Mixen had a good outing in the shot put finishing in 3rd place with an 82-11.5 toss. Kimberly finished in 7th place in 2008 and was determined to place in 2009.

Chandra Parr placed 6th in the long jump with a jump of 14-01.5.

In one of Lick Creek’s strongest events, the varsity relay Aviston prevailed with a 1st place finish just easing past the team of Amanda Conaway, Nina Mattingly, Alexis Schaefer, Rebecca Mitchell. Lick Creek 2nd place finish was a 1.58.76.

Other area teams who competed well were as follows: Vienna 28.5 points (6th place), Meridian 24 points (8th place), Goreville 24 points (8th place tie), Giant City 12 points (12th place) and Cobden 10 points (17th place).

There are approximately 72 teams that compete in Class S track each year; supporters congratulate each of the aforementioned teams.
