I never realized how much technology I relied on.

I read all kinds of articles explaining to adults how young people are addicted to the internet and technology and I say to myself, “I’m the minority. I could easily go without it for a few days.”

These last few days have shown me how incredibly wrong I am.

I recently went on vacation and got the dreaded text message “you have reached 75 percent of your data for this cycle.”

That’s fine. I’m on vacation, I don’t need it anyway. Just 10 more days and it will restart.

I suddenly got the urge to snapchat my toes in the water and all the wonderful food I was consuming.

I couldn’t.

Then, we had the dreaded 10 hour drive ahead of us.

Did I bring a book? No.

Did I bring an iPod? No.

I was solely relying on my conversations with my family and my cell phone, which was useless without any data.

I eventually caved and checked Facebook and played my games every once and a while, hoping I wouldn't go over my data limit.

Eventually, I opted sleep would pass the time away faster.

Now, back at home, I’m thankful for my wifi and I’m consuming all the content I can within my four hour window between coming home from work and bed time.

Speaking of internet, one of my many jobs here at The Gazette-Democrat is to update our website and manage our social media presence.

Well, our internet decided to go out Wednesday afternoon. That was ok. I had a few stories to retype and took the rare opportunity to clean out my desk.

However, when I came in Thursday morning, the day I usually spend most of my time updating the website and our social media, I found out the internet was still unavailable. I had two options.

One- sit at my desk, hoping some press releases would come in (oh wait, that can’t happen. We don’t have email.) Or two- find somewhere with internet to perform my daily duties. I opted for option two.

As I drove to my internet-filled location, I pondered that when I was born, the internet was just becoming available to the general public.

Literally, over half my job didn’t exist when I was born. That’s such an interesting thought to me.

How many other jobs didn’t exist 22 years ago?

-Social media analysts/manager.

-SEO specialist

-App designer/developer

-Bloggers

-Data miner

-Digital marketer

This list goes on for a while. Makes you wonder, would your job exist without the internet/technology? Or, how different or more difficult would your job be?

Shameless plug, like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gazettedemocrat and follow us on Twitter @gazettedemocrat.
