Lot of experience returns for A-J wrestling squad
Anna-Jonesboro Community High School wrestling heads coach Rick Bittle returns a strong contingent of wrestlers from last season.
“We’ve got a lot of experience coming back,” Bittle said. “We’d like to compete for the conference and regional title. They’ve got to work for it.”
The Wildcats have 27 grapplers competing in the different weight classes.
Seniors who return are Brett Turner, 215 pounds; Brad Cerney, 140-145 pounds; Chase Hargrave, 145-152 pounds; Daniel Heath, 119-125 pounds; and Taylor Fitzgerald, 189 pounds.
Juniors vying for varsity spots are Tanner Anderson, 119 pounds; Andrew McMahan, 160-171 pounds; Andrew Adams, 112 pounds; Forrest Palis, 130-135 pounds; Chris Adams, 119-125 pounds; Brian Kern, 125-130 pounds; Levi Pearson, 152-pounds; Damon Ray, 145 pounds; Joey Piccola, 135 pounds.
Sophomores who could see varsity action are Ryan Brown, 125-130 pounds; Brandon Cross, 135-140 pounds; Austin Noble, middle weight; Logan Tripp, 171 pounds; Ian Mull, 215 pounds; Chris Edwards, 215 pounds and Jay Davis 189 pounds.
Freshmen on the team are Devon LaFine, 103 pounds; Austin Swink, 119 pounds; Louie Bennett, 135 pounds; Keifer Dabbs, 135 pounds; and Joseph Tingley, 103 pounds.
“We’ve had a great first week of practice,” Bittle said. We’re looking forward to the season. We’d like to see seven or eight advance to the sectional this year.”
Assistant coaches are Kevin Stephens and Brock Bittle.
The Wildcats open their season against West Frankfort at home Monday, Nov. 29.
