Property tax due dates set in August, October
The tax due dates for the 2015 real estate property tax year (paid in 2016) are set for Aug. 17 and Oct. 17, Union County Treasurer Darren Bailey has reported.
The bills are scheduled to be mailed this coming Monday.
The due dates for mobile homes taxes have not yet been established.
The treasurer voiced disappointment in the dates, which are about two-and-ahalf weeks later than the targeted goal of July 30, which was met the past two years.
“Every year, getting the taxes out is a collaborative effort of multiple county departments. This year, the team wasn’t able to meet its goal,” Bailey stated in a July 8 news release.
The treasurer noted that two years ago, Union County Board of Commissioners chairman Richard Cunningham and the rest of the commissions "set a target of July 30, and two years in a row that target was reached.”
Better planning and improved financial operations means the county government is not likely to feel much pain.
“Unfortunately, the entities that are most-threatened by the delay are our schools, which are unlikely to receive a property tax disbursement before the start of school,” Bailey said.
“The process this year did not meet the new operational standards being set in this organization, and I believe that with good leadership, tax generation will be another success story for the county going forward.”
Board of commissioners chairman Cunningham voiced an apology for the delay.
Cunningham addressed the matter at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners which was held Friday morning, July 8. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.
