Thebes Courthouse Memorial Day weekend to feature Lincoln portrait
Recent improvements at the Old Thebes Courthouse, as well as a special portrait of Abraham Lincoln, will be featured during an upcoming annual Memorial Day weekend event which is planned on Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26.
The celebration is scheduled at the Thebes Historical Courthouse from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The weekend’s activities will be sponsored by the Thebes Historical Society.
The society noted that the Memorial Day weekend will offer an opportunity to see the improvements at the courthouse and the progress on an 1800s log cabin project. Tours of the courthouse will be available both days.
A reproduction of a celebrated Abraham Lincoln portrait is scheduled to be on display during the weekend.
The portrait was presented to the Alexander County Courthouse to commemorate the bicentennial of the State of Illinois, which was in 2018.
The Illinois State Historical Society, ISHS, led a statewide campaign to place a framed copy of the portrait in courthouses in each county in Illinois.
ISHS partnered with the Illinois Judges Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and their respective foundations, the Illinois Judges Foundation and the Illinois Bar Foundation, to make the project possible.
Various community members will provide piano music during the weekend activities.
Members of the Thebes Historical Society will be selling barbeque sandwiches, chips and drinks.
Quilt raffle tickets will be available for purchase at a cost of $2 each or six for $10. The winner will be announced at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26.
A community worship service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Sunday at the courthouse. The Rev. Ray McAfee, who is the pastor of Thebes First Baptist Church, is scheduled to bring the message.
David Tapley and Cathy McCain will lead the music. They are music leaders at the Thebes church.
A wide variety of gift shop items will be available for purchase.
All proceeds from the Memorial Day weekend event will benefit the maintenance and preservation of the Old Thebes Historical Courthouse, its grounds and the log cabin.
The Thebes Historical Society, which hosts the weekend activities, is a small group of volunteers who depend on the support of the public to accomplish their mission. The society welcomes new members.
